Murray is a safe Liberal seat in northern Victoria. It covers Victorian towns on the southern side of the Murray river, including Shepparton and Echuca.

The seat has always been held by conservative seats. It was held by John McEwen from 1949 to 1971, during which time he served as a senior minister and Country Party leader, and briefly served as Prime Minister in 1967 and 1968. The Liberal Party wrested the seat off the Nationals in 1996, and has been held since that year by Sharman Stone.
