History
The electorate has existed continuously since 1993. The seat was won in 1993 by the Liberal Party, but it has been held by the ALP continuously since a 1994 by-election.

The name ‘Torrens’ was used for two previous electorates: a multi-member electorate from 1902 to 1915, and another district from 1938 to 1985. The 1938-85 seat was held by the Liberal Party for all but one term during its existence.

The current version of Torrens was created as a notional Labor seat in 1993, but was won by the Liberal Party’s Joe Tiernan.

Tiernan died in 1994, and the ensuing Torrens by-election was won by Robyn Geraghty.

Geraghty was re-elected in 1997, 2002, 2006 and 2010. Her margin peaked at 19.1% at the 2006 election.

Geraghty retired in 2014, and the seat was won by Labor’s Dana Wortley. Wortley was re-elected in 2018 and 2022.

  1. Dana Wortley announced her retirement around 10 days ago, Labor haas preselected Meagan Spencer for this seat.

    Labor retain.

  2. @James my prediction is that even with all these high profile retirements, there will be no Labor-held seats in Adelaide that will flip the other way round. In other words I’m fairly confident that Dunstan, Black, Waite will be Labor holds, and Labor has a decent shot with flipping Hartley, Morialta and maybe even Bragg.

  3. @Tommo9 – couldn’t agree with you more. Especially considering the last time a Liberal won Torrens was in the 1993 landslide, and even then the MP lasted just a year as I believe he died in office.
