Albert – Queensland 2012

ALP 6.5%

Incumbent MP
Margaret Keech, since 2001.

Geography
South-East Queensland. Albert covers northwestern parts of Gold Coast City and parts of Logan City. It covers the suburbs of Oxenford, Upper Coomera, Studio Village, Mount Warren Park, Windaroo and parts of Coomera, Ormeau and Pimpama.

History
The seat of Albert was first created in 1888, and has existed for all but ten years since then. The seat was abolished in 1950 and restored in 1960. The seat has been a marginal seat regularly changing hands since the 1970s.

In its early years, the seat was dominated by various conservative MPs, with the ALP never winning the seat prior to its abolition in 1950.

In 1960 it was won by the Country Party’s Cec Carey. He held the seat until his death in 1969.

The 1970 by-election was won by Liberal candidate Bill Heatley. Heatley had previously filled a vacancy in the Senate and served as a Senator from 1966 to 1968. He died in late 1971.

At the 1972 election, Albert was won by Labor candidate Bill D’Arcy. He held the seat for one term, losing in 1974. He later won the seat of Woodridge in 1977 and held it until 2000.

Albert was won in 1974 by National Country Party candidate Ivan Gibbs. He served as a minister in the conservative government from 1979 to 1989.

The ALP’s John Szczerbanik won Albert in 1989. He was re-elected in 1992 but lost the seat in 1995 to the National Party’s Bill Baumann. Baumann was defeated in 2001 by the ALP’s Margaret Keech.

Candidates
Sitting Labor MP Margaret Keech is running for re-election. The LNP is running Mark Boothman. The Greens are running Petrina Maizey. Katter’s Australian Party is running Adam Hollis.

Political situation
The seat of Albert has a history as a marginal seat, although the last redistribution cut out more conservative parts of the old Albert. The seat’s 6.5% margin is certainly vulnerable to the LNP.

  1. Sarah, you can’t use capital letters correctly, you use an old trope of newspaper comments pages (that “Person of Suburb” thing), and you can’t even read… it’s actually William you’re agreeing with, not the subtly-named ‘Katter Supporter’. To put this short: get off the internet.

Good grief, and I wanted to make fun of the Katter party… at least their shills know how to use the internet. Your lot don’t. Take that piece of info back to LNP HQ and make sure your boss understands it and learns from it.

  2. Excuse you bird. I’m showing my support for Mark because he is the best candidate. If you want to attack a pensioner because I’m not as smart as you, I say go for it! It just shows your true character.

  3. I absolutely agree with William. Mark Boothman is the best candidate for Albert. He works hard for us and he knows what he is doing. He will be a very good MP and best thing of all is good for us too!!!

  4. Where does Mark live? I heard from a friend he lived in Springwood. Can anyone clarify that? I hope that Mark doesnt live in Springwood. We dont want any wannabe career politicians living in other areas trying to win a seat in MY AREA.

Seriously is Mark the best person for the job? I was looking at his credentials and the only thing he had for him was he does a bit of community work. I want change and if I have to support LNP and Mark Boothman, I hope he is here for the right reason and not to be a Career Politician like I think he is.

  5. That wouldn’t surprise me Jordan.

Bird of Paradox come on mate. That was a little low. Picking on people and their inability to communicate on the internet. We should be focusing our concern on how to get rid of Captain Bligh and make sure we get good representation.

  6. Mark Boothman live in Upper Coomera, Easy to find on his web site, As for his credentials, Again only need to look, By the way as any one seen what Margret doing or as done in her seat, No much, And what credentials as Adam got ???

  7. Paul, Lets focus on how to get rid of the labor government and how we get the best outcomes for Albert. As we ALL know, Mark Boothman is the best candidate for Albert. He knows how the system works and ways to fix the system. I know this because he helped me a lot and I strongly believe that Mark will be a very good MP for us. Let KAP supporters talk. Constituents have already know who is the best for the job. Let constituents judge on Mark. NOT KAP supporters.

  8. Give the independent ago!

a question for anyone that can answer it.

At the last election a lot of media and people voted for the devil we knew. Why was that? Because we didn’t know the devil on the other side.

LNP voters, why are you still supporting LNP if they are the same devil 3 years ago. You cannot say that changing a leader, changes everything. Get it through your heads that unless you sort yourselves out within your own party you will still be seen as a devil that cannot be trusted. Have a look at the federal election. We wanted Gillard out so we voted greens. People don’t want to vote LNP. The same will be for this state election. Bring on fresh blood with fresh ideas and fresh experience.

There is continued rumors and media reports stated that Campbell Newman and the LNP who run the party cannot even get along. So I am waiting to see LNP loose another election when they could of won it outright. All because LNP cannot run themselves. How can they run the state?

  9. I agree too. Lets get rid of Labor. As we all know if you are a LNP supporter of course you will think Mark Boothman is the best candidate. But Im not sure about that. How about the greens candidate or Family first. They seem to be good choices just like LNP Mark. Its not a popularity contest. Its all about real policies, real action and real representation. I just dont think we can get that from the big two parties. Sorry if I upset someone. Petrina Has my vote.

  10. As we ALL know, Mark Boothman is the best candidate for Albert.

Speak for yourself only. I’m neither from Queensland nor a Liberal supporter (y’know the internet goes worldwide, right?), so I wouldn’t have a clue who this Boothman guy is (or any of the others), but I do judge candidates on the quality of their supporters on online comments pages, and his are rather low. Sitting here in Perth, with little knowledge of Katter beyond his hat, old-style agrarian socialism, homophobic leanings, and his hat, I’d still recommend a vote for his party above the Liberals just based on you and your colleagues.

  11. Bird of Paradox called for a “full inquiry into the media, both ownership and regulation, in Australia” yesterday, in light of the recent failing to use capital letters correctly scandal in Queensland.

” I’d still recommend a vote for his party ”

Please avoid contractions in your writing. “It could mean I had or I would.” A simple builder knows that!

“Sitting here in Perth, with little knowledge of Katter beyond his hat, old-style agrarian socialism, homophobic leanings, and his hat” Write concisely, no need to repeat a point you have made already.

Ok, enough of that, I’m petty and proud of it!

  12. We should vote for a candidate who knows what he is doing and who knows how to solve issues and who is willing to serve communities. If you meet and talk to Mark Boothman, you know what I am talking about. It is very hard to judge a person over the internet. Remember, being only a nice enough person is not going to solve issues even though he becomes MP. Mark Boothman is the best candidate for the reasons. He knows how to deal with the system and issues.

  13. Jett, How can a candidate know how to solve issues if they are tied by party politics? You are so convinced that LNP will be better. Please explain.
Example, if residents wanted to stop a quarry from going ahead ie (in Ormeau)and they go to the local member who may be LNP after march sometime. I can guarantee that LNP will not be able to solve the issue. Because one of LNP major sponsors is the owner of the quarry, Wagners. That sounds like good representation and able to solve the issues. Sorry LNP and Labor your time of promising us the world and delivering nothing has to stop. Time for change. Give an independent a go! Don’t even think about Labor.

  14. John, my son worked for Boral and he has informed me Boral purchased the Wagner’s quarry land last year.

Bert Van Manen who is the member for Forde is fighting to protect the former Wagner’s property from quarry development. He is trying to protect an endangered bottle tree.
At the last federal election, Brett (Labor) wanted to protect quarry jobs and Bert (Liberal National) wanted to protect the bottle tree.

I did not vote Greens because they will put an environmental easement through my property! I admit to voting for Gillard.

Cost of living pressures and a slow building market is hurting. What does Gillard do, gives us a carbon tax!

I have a house full of kids who can’t afford to buy their own homes. I’m too old for this!

  15. Remember, when LNP forms the government, independent MP and minor party MP will be in the opposition. How can they deliver thier promises to our electrate when they are in the opposition? Are we going to waste another 3 years? If Labor forms the government again, they will stuff up more and are we going to wait for another 3 years to change the govenment?
What is the chance of minor party and independent form the government? Who can deliver services the best to Albert of 4 candidates when the new government is formed? When i think of my benefits and my family’s to get things done, I would like to choose someone who can do the job rather than my party preferences.

Mark Boothman is the best candidate

  16. So is wagners and boral an LNP donor? I know you might have good intentions as a candidate or sitting member but you cant deny who is controlling the lnp machine. Donors or voters?

  17. So what donors give to the Katter Party? To run a party you need donors to get the message out there. Same thing applies to all parties.

  18. So you agree that donors are running the show?

Well I can say that corporate Australia or QLD is not running BOBS TEAM. Most money raised has been done by individual people who want change. Im sure there has been donations from trade unions, fishing and shooting organisations, christian organisations, and a few others. Corporate QLD wouldn’t give money to BOB KATTER because BOB would make them loose some money for the workers and families instead of greedy businesses trying to bribe political parties to make hefty profits for their business. SHAME ON LABOR AND LNP!

  19. Campbell Newmanleft Council finances in tatters with one lunatic scheme after after another. Every service the BCC provided went up well beyond the CPI to pay for his ego driven projects & the city is still a billion in the red. What do you think he’s going to do with the State?

  20. Um..that’s a bit silly isn’t it Mr.Newman? It’s the incumbent Government who calls and sets the election date….not the opposition. Although I am a Lib through and through…I’m afraid this might be LNP’s first campaign mistake and will leave egg on their face. Not good. I hope Mark wont be stupid as our next member of parliament! good luck Mark but hope you will side with the constituents who voted you and not your party. Tha’ts the only thing Margaret Keech has for her name. She crossed the bench and Labor has crucified her.

  21. I cant wait either Tim. 70 days till I vote for change and someone who will represent me. Good on you Bob Katter and Adam Hollis.

  22. Millionaire donors controls Katter party.

“Cowboys calling the shots for Bob Katter’s party.”

“LITTLE has been made of the links between Bob Katter’s new political party and shooting interests but the website of the gun-dealing millionaire who is the party’s senior vice-president gives an insight into the thirst for bloodsports of some of its backers.”

    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/cowboys-calling-the-shots-for-bob-katters-party/story-fn59niix-1226177792065

“It boasts an image of him and his wife, Mr Katter’s daughter, posing with the dead oryx, which is officially listed as extinct in the wild and survives in the low thousands”

Former President George W Bush was in league with the National Rifle Association in the US. Bob Katter is in league with the same in Australia?

Shooting feral pigs and other vermin can be condoned, but killing extinct animals for sport?

  23. I don’t have a problem shooting that extinct animal that you are referring too. The park that it was shot at was in Australia and you pay some ridiculous amount of money to SHOOT LEGALLY this animal. The animal was bred for hunting purposes. If it was so bad why hasn’t RSPCA got on board? Where are the greenies too then?
So I think you got another story wrong.
Yes the shooting association supports Katters Australian Party. That doesn’t mean that we will automatically support gun laws and bring back assult rifles. Its just another minor organisations that feels threaten by the way labor and LNP want to nanny state this state/country. Just ask the fishing donors, the unions etc. But I still say this, I am comfortable to say that no corporate business has a donor through the party to my knowledge.I just a member of the party so not sure. But I am sure That will change over time as people see us a viable option to the LNP and Labor governments.

  24. I saw Bob Katter Yesterday and Adam Hollis at Oxenford shops.

Good Luck and hope that you do well. Any indication of the polls, ypu will do really well and stick it up to the Labor and LNP grubs who have destroyed this state and country.

  25. If we look at what happened in Broadbeach LNP candidate caught drink driving and resigned, we look at Coomera LNP member of Parliament a big drunk, we see three defectors from LNP this year, we start to see a common denominator. LNP cannot organize themsleves as opposition, how are they going to organize themselves as government? Any time LNP have a sniff of winning the election they fall apart. It goes to show that a two party system does not work.
I revert back to my previous blogs, LNP are only getting support now because Labor has failed dramatically. I really hope that LNP can get their act together because we need a change in government. I guess it looks like more and more will support KAP because they are not going to vote for a party out of default.

Did you know Micheal Crandon MP for Coomera lives in Kingsholme and has destroyed his community and they are not happy with the LNP one bit. A LNP member of parliament looking after himself and not his community. Shame on him. Just thought I would throw that in there as to back on my claim about LNP incompetence of looking after the welfare of our state, especially if they are grubs!

  26. If you want to talk about Micheal Crandon MP, GO TO Coomera page. If you want to talk about Broadbeach LNP candidate, GO TO Broadbeach page. Do NOT bring someone else’s mistakes here. Mark is a hard working candidate and simply wants to help people. Mark knows what he is doing and doing very well. The matter is

“Voting for a minor party is going to help Labor government back in”

  27. By the way, It DOES NOT matter where MPs live. The matter is HOW they perform.
Margaret Keech lives in Albert electrate. Unfortunately she has been performing very poorly.
We need someone who CAN DO this job, who CAN HELP us.

“Mark Boothman is the best for the job”

  28. Jett, you raise an interesting point regarding where pollies live, be it, that you dont care where they live as long as they can do the job. Well Jett, this is typical banter from the LnP purely protecting Can’t do in his attempt to gain an electorate where he does not live. This however contradicts the statement made by ‘The Borg’ back in 2006 when he stated that he believed that the only way that a representative can make a difference is within his own community. Big bold statement. He was referring of course to his electorate in which he lives and attempted to represent. Therefore you contradict your own parties belief that grassroots representation is what counts. Your party the LnP, maintained this very view up to the day that your little lord, Can’t do took over. You now espouse Can’t do’s beliefs. I like the fact that Mark Boothman is a community man and resides in his own electorate (I believe). I also like his commitment to community via service in the SES. This demonstrates a selfless approach. It is a pity that Mark is not running for a minor party because he is the type of person that the minor parties portray. Albert has a good candidate in Hollis who is running for katter. Albert also has a good candidate in your bloke. QLD HAS A TERRIBLE CHOICE IN CAN’T DO.

  29. Just want to say that the LNP supporters will be upset. This election is not about what a candidate can do, it is what the party stands for. Katters Australian Party stands for values and principles. I challenge anyone to have a look at them and tell me they dont agree with them. http://www.ausparty.org
I cant say that about any other party and the voters know this and will vote us in by the dozens because enough is enough and peopld are sick of whats on offer a labor government who has screwed us and a weak opposition.
The point about other candidates is to point out that the LNP brand is a disease and cant be contained. what was on the front page of the gc bulletin? And the LNP wanted him for broadbeach. oh LNP what more can i say. Mark you are probably a nice guy,

  30. Last night I attended a “meet the candidates” forum hosted by the Australian Christian Lobby at the Beenleigh Baptist Church. 3 of the 5 candidates for Albert turned up. Mr Boothman is apparently recovering from recent surgery so was unable to attend, however was able to attend the Oxenford NHW meet the candidate 2 nights earler????. Petrina Maizey was expected to attend but was also a no show. Margaret Keech spoke very well in her allocated 5 minutes as did the Family First candidate Amanda Best. both have very clear visions on what they will fight for in in the next term if elected. Very impressive ladies!

  31. Albert Elector: Mark sent a great apology to christian lobby forum. Do you expect a person in the pain to attend the forum??? He had the pain at Oxenford NHW. After that night at Oxenford, he had sharper pains and could not move for a while. The antivirus he has got makes him drowsy. He was not allowed to drive either. That is the reason why he was unable to attend. Great apologies to people who wanted to meet Mark Boothman at the forum and anyone who wanted to ask Mark Boothman questions, please do not hesitate to contact him, I am sure he will be able to answer his clear visions for you.

Remember, Voting for a minor party is voting to get mismanaging Labor Government (Anna Bligh) back in.

  32. By the way, if you want things get done, vote for Mark Boothman. Mark will answer your phone calls, Mark will reply your emails and Mark will meet you personally and listen to you. Margaret Keech MP is a nice person but Mark Boothman is nicer.

  33. MARK BOOTHMAN WILL NOT STOP THE INCREASE IN THE SALE OF STATE ASSETS.

    ADAM HOLLIS WILL.

You boring tories make me sleep. All about personalities. Nothing about substance,

Yes Boothman is a great SES volunteer. How is he going to stop 70% of THE STATE OF QLD being sold off to the Chinese or Indians??????

HOLLIS WILL DO IT BY LEGISLATING.

BOOTHMAN WILL TOW THE PATHETIC LnP PARTY LINE AND ESNURE THAT THERE IS AN INDIAN RAIL LINE MANNED BY INDIANS WITH ALL $$$$ GOING BACK TO NEW DELHI TO ENSURE THAT THE SUB CONTINENT PROSPERS FROM DIRECT MNING TRADE ORIGINATING FROM THE BOWEN BASIN VIA CURTIS ISLAND. YOU THINK THIS IS RUBBISH – GIVE IT 5 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT MAKES ME SICK, IS THAT YOU PEOPLE THINK THAT THE POINTS ESPOUSED ARE PROPAGANDA. READ THE FIN REVIEW. RESEARCH PRIMARY SOURCES. I BEG OF YOU.

  34. “Being a great volunteer”
This shows that Mark is a part of our communities, Mark is caring about our communities, Mark wants to help others and Mark is a grass root politician. What is wrong with that??? I think this is a great start as a politician. I am sure that Mark will represent people here very well. I hate a politician sitting behind his desk without not knowing what is going on in the electrate.

  35. Where was Adan Hollis when we had a problem with the bridge on the Tamborine ? Where he with Albert issuses, At leased Mark get of his ass and works for Albert, Nice to see Margret for a few day till she goes walk about again,

  36. Hard to believe Mark Boothman & Crandon are from same party. Boothman works his ass off and Crandon simply sits on his.

  37. Mark has received big thanks from his constituents by helping them out while Margaret Keech has been ignoring thier problems. She has done NOTHING in Albert electrate. I like to know WHY there are so many unsolved issues left? WHY is she ignoring people’s voices?
She has been MP for 10 years under Labor Government and she could have been able to solve many issues easily. She performed very poorly for past years. Now she came out and trying to do something simply because election is coming up.

Chase: Apparently Crandon and Margaret are good friends….

  38. I was SO impressed to see Adam Hollis standing in the pouring rain on Friday afternoon in Oxenford. This was a really positive first impression and after looking further into the party’s issues, I’m seriously thinking of voting for a different party after being a lifetime Liberal supporter.

  39. Mark has been doing roadsides for over 12months and been standing in the pouring rain so many times. He does roadsides every single weekend BEFORE election was called. He doorknocked the vast majory of houses in his electrate. This is called “IMPRESSED”

  40. sick of politics. Look at Anna on TV and how she is trying to make the floods her saviour. But look at Campbell shady Newman.

Katters Australian Party Adam Hollis will play a big part in Albert Seat. Wait and see Albert Voters swing from both Labor and Liberal votes. This certainly will be a three horse race by election day. We dont have to be smart too work out what the big parties represent and its not their constituents!

    Up and Adam.

  41. Shame on Campbell Newman for not dis-endorsing a candidate with Porn Allegations. Surely Campbell will show leadership in this time of need. Oh, I forgot he has no leadership that’s why there is a internal leadership fight with Libs Nichols/Santoro Vs Nats Sprinborg/Smith

What can I say A shady Leader with shady and sleazy candidates!

  42. It really isn’t helpful to make personal attacks on any of the candidates, it appears the allegations are just that. Let’s get on with the election it’s time for a new Government in Queensland we all know that, so many stuff ups over the past 20 years, too many to list.
The 24th can’t arrive fast enough.

  43. Oh how ironic, ‘Katter Supporter’ is talking about leadership. Your so called “leader” who isn’t even running this election can’t even work out the name he wants to appear on the ballot paper. If you actually researched your argument you’d learn that Mark Boothman did not go out of his way to have pornography displayed on his website. In fact his site was hacked, and he then decided it was time to pull the plug on the site all together when it became hijacked. Please tell your Leader, whoever that may be (Katter, McLindor, Katter Jnr) that when they work out what name they want to appear on the ballot paper then they can think about running for government.
