Rumney – Tasmania LC 2023

Incumbent MLC
Sarah Lovell (Labor), since 2017.

Geography
South-eastern corner of Tasmania. Rumney covers the outer eastern suburbs of Hobart, including Otago, Risdon, Risdon Vale, Old Beach, Richmond, Cambridge and Rokeby. Most of the seat is contained in the Clarence council area, along with small parts of the Sorell and Brighton council areas.

Redistribution
Rumney contracted to come closer to Hobart, losing the Tasman council area and most of the Sorell council area, including Sorell itself, to Prosser. Rumney then gained parts of north-eastern Hobart from Pembroke and Derwent, including Risdon Vale, Risdon, Otago and Old Beach.

History
The seat of Rumney was first created in 1999, and was won that year by Labor candidate Lin Thorp.

Thorp was re-elected in 2005 and went on to serve as a minister in the Labor government from 2008 until 2011.

Thorp was defeated in 2011 by conservative independent Tony Mulder. Mulder won by a 1278-vote margin. Thorp was later appointed to fill a casual vacancy in the Senate in 2012. She lost her seat at the 2013 election, and left the Senate in mid-2014 after two years in office.

Tony Mulder sat as an independent in the Legislative Council but has links to the Liberal Party, having stood for the party at the 2010 state election.

Mulder ran for re-election in 2017, but lost a close race to Labor’s Sarah Lovell.

Candidates

Assessment
Lovell was narrowly elected in 2017 but now has the benefit of incumbency and would have a good chance. The seat has likely become stronger for Labor as it has become more urban but we don’t have a redistribution estimate. There will also be a face-off between the Liberal candidate and the former member as to who is the main conservative challenger. Mulder has a history of holding the seat but may be crowded out by the major parties.
