Geography
North-eastern Tasmania. McIntyre stretches from Dorset council area in the north-eastern corner of the mainland, wrapping around Break O’Day council area, through northern parts of the Northern Midlands council area to take in the Meander Valley council area. The seat also covers Flinders Island. The seat wraps around Launceston without including any part of the city, and almost reaches Devonport. Major towns include Scottsdale, St Helens and Deloraine.
Redistribution
McIntyre is a new electorate, created in 2017 out of parts of Apsley and Western Tiers. McIntyre took in Flinders Island, Dorset and Break O’Day council areas, along with part of Northern Midlands, from Apsley, as well as more inland areas from Western Tiers.
Western Tiers was effectively abolished, with the former member for Western Tiers serving as a second member for McIntyre until the 2018 elections.
History
The electorate of Apsley was created in 1999 and was first held by independent Colin Rattray, who had previously held South Esk, which he won in 1992 and 1998.
Rattray retired in 2004, and was succeeded by his daughter Tania Rattray. The younger Rattray was re-elected in 2010 and 2016.
Western Tiers was created in 2008 and was held throughout its existence by independent Greg Hall. Hall had first won Rowallan in 2001, and again in 2006. He won a third term in Western Tiers in 2012, and retired in 2018 after his seat was abolished in 2017.
