After all the talk about the political consequences of the abolition of Hill, I have to wonder if the redistribution has actually disadvantaged the KAP, at least to the extent that some have made it out be. Couldn’t Knuth contest here?
It’s meant they have to fight an incumbent just to hold one of their own seats, LNP would have been rank outsiders in the existing Hill and not made the effort. A few of the FNQ seats could become quite interesting 3-horse races with ONP in the mix, Hinchinbrook polarised between KAP and the LNP but I’m not sure that will happen again at a general
ONP is traditionally strong here and won this seat in their 1998 peak. In 2017 they almost outpolled the LNP but Labor Primary was too high for ONP to win on LNP preferences.
The western part of this electorate was in Tablelands district, which was the only seat won by One Nation in 2004 and 2006.
Funnily enough, in 2009, Tablelands and Charters Towers districts were abolished and merged into Dalrymple, and both sitting MPs both contested Dalrymple. Who was the sitting Member for Charters Towers? Shane Knuth, who was then in the LNP. And the rest is history.
