Europe 2009 – Cyprus

0

Cyprus joined the European Union, electing 6 MEPs in its first election as a single constituency, as they will again in 2009. The result was:

  • Democratic Rally (European People’s Party) – 28.2%, 2 seats
  • Progressive Party of Working People (European United Left) – 27.9%, 2 seats
  • Democratic Party (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) – 17.1%, 1 seat
  • For Europe (EPP) – 10.8%, 1 seat

There is very little information in terms of opinion polls measuring Cypriot voting intention. However, Cypriot politics is relatively stable, so it is easy to predict that the major parties will both win 2 seats and the Democratic Party will win one. The final seat is most likely up for grabs.
