Geography
South-eastern Perth. Cannington covers the suburbs of Cannington, East Cannington, Beckenham, Queens Park, Wilson, Lynwood, Langford, Parkwood and parts of Ferndale, Thornlie, Welshpool. Cannington covers parts of Canning and Gosnells council areas.

Redistribution
Cannington lost a small area south of the Roe Highway to Thornlie, and gained Parkwood from Riverton and part of Welshpool from Victoria Park. These changes cut the Labor margin from 2.1% to 1.5%.

History
Cannington was created as a new district in the 2008 redistribution as a notional Labor seat, with a margin of over 13%.

Cannington was won in 2008 by Labor’s Bill Johnston, and he was re-elected in 2013.

Assessment
Cannington is a very marginal Labor seat, but it is likely that the seat will become safer for Labor if there is a general statewide swing away from the government.
