Stafford nominations close

Nominations were announced yesterday for the by-election in the Queensland state seat of Stafford.

Only four candidates nominated, representing Labor, Liberal National, Greens and Family First:

  • Bob Anderson (Liberal National)
  • Sally-Anne Vincent (Family First)
  • Anne Boccabella (Greens)
  • Anthony Lynham (Labor)

This is in contrast to the Redcliffe by-election in February, when nine candidates stood – five independents, and representatives of the same four parties.

In particular, it was interested that Clive Palmer’s Palmer United Party has chosen for the third successive time this year to skip a by-election in the Brisbane area (including the federal by-election in Griffith). The PUP has won the most support in Queensland, and Clive Palmer holds a seat on the Sunshine Coast. The party also includes a number of state MPs in the Queensland Parliament.

The by-election will be held on July 19. I’m unlikely to be in a position to cover the results, as I will be travelling in the US at the time.
