Maps update

I’m still working on my map of UK House of  Commons constituencies for the next general election. I recently finished the East of England, for a total of 270 constituencies out of 650. As you can see below, this map now covers the southern half of England.

In addition, I’ve also gone through most of my electoral maps and improved the colouring for each map to make the colours brighter and easier to see. Hopefully these will be more useful for people. The maps I have updated include state and federal electoral maps for Australia, the Canadian House of Commons, the US House of Representatives and the New Zealand Parliament.

UK map update

Amongst everything else, I’m still working on my Google Earth map of House of Commons constituencies. I recently finished work on the seats in the South West region and uploaded the latest version to my maps page. The latest version of the map covers 212 of the 650 seats that will elect MPs at the next general election.

Yet more maps

I have completed a couple more Google Earth maps and uploaded them to the Maps page of the blog. I have completed GE maps of Local Government Area boundaries in both Western Australia and Tasmania. Now the only Australian council areas I haven’t covered now are those in the Northern Territory. I also have yet to complete ward maps for WA, SA and NT (there are no council wards in Tasmania).

Brilliant new booth maps

Nathan Lambert has extended the work that Possum has done in mapping election results by booth. He has produced excellent Google Earth maps showing vote levels, which you can access here. I’ll probably spend all day playing with them.

Update: Lambert’s go great with my Google Earth maps showing electoral boundaries. You can download them from my maps page, and you can overlay the boundaries and the booths.

Mapping update

I’ve added a few more maps today. I’ve completed the Google Earth map for the new Tasmanian boundaries for the next federal and state elections in 2010, and I’ve also uploaded a new version of the Queensland state map with the colours updated to the final election result.

New electoral maps – Ireland

There is no election scheduled in the Republic of Ireland for the next three years, but there is a good chance that the economic crisis may force an early election, and I have completed a Google Earth electoral map of constituencies in the Dail Eireann, the lower house of the Irish legislature.

The Dail includes 43 constituencies electing 166 deputies or Teachtaí Dála (TDs), with each constituency electing 3-5 TDs.

This map includes both the boundaries used for the 2007 election and the new redistributed boundaries for the next election between 2009 and 2012. I have coloured the old boundaries blue and the new boundaries red, so you can see the differences (although most constituencies remain almost entirely the same). Google Earth allows you to also turn off different layers to see the map differently. I’ve also included labels for each 2009/12 constituency, which also include the number of TDs to be elected at the next election.

You can download it here.

Queensland election preparations

With the possible imminent calling of a state election in Queensland, I’ve moved ahead with plans for election night coverage, using my Google Earth map of the new Queensland boundaries, which you can check out here. There’s still some kinks to be worked out. For a start, the map seems determined to rotate 90 degrees, with the west pointing upwards on the map. It’s easy to fix this by clicking the north point on the compass, which will re-align the map.

I’m planning to do a lot more with this map. At the very least, I plan to embed recent results, candidates and the sitting MP’s details for each electorate. I’m also hoping to link the map to XML results from the ECQ and/or ABC elections, which would allow people to follow results in map form, and also follow it from within Google Earth. I’d ideally love to also set it up to change the electorate colouring according to results, but I don’t expect to be able to do that. I’m lacking in technical knowlege on this front, so if people can help with advice, it would be much appreciated.

UK Parliament boundaries

So the UK will see a general election either this year or next year, and the election will see a new set of boundaries being used in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, while Scotland last had a redistribution before the 2005 election. I’ve started drawing the electoral boundaries in Google Earth. It’s a big task, so I thought I’d upload what I’ve done so far. I’ve completed two regions of England, being Greater London and the South East. Collectively these regions elect 157 MPs, just under a quarter of the House. You can access it here.

New Queensland state boundaries

I’ve completed another Google Earth map. I’ve posted the new boundaries for this year’s Queensland election on my maps page. You can also view the 2006 boundaries, and you can compare the two if you download them and look at them in Google Earth.

Yet more maps: South Australia

I’ve finally finished off my electoral map of South Australia. The map is based on the new boundaries for the 2010 election and can be found at the maps page. Next stop, Queensland’s new 2009 boundaries.
