Ninderry – QLD 2017

LNP 6.9%

Incumbent MP
Ninderry is a new seat.

Geography
Sunshine Coast. Ninderry covers the Sunshine Coast suburbs of Kunda Park, Bli Bli, Eumundi and Coolum Beach.

Redistribution
Ninderry is a new seat, created out of parts of Noosa, Nicklin, Buderim and a small part of Maroochydore.

History
Ninderry was created out of parts of four seats.

The seat of Buderim was created in 2009, and has been won by the Liberal National Party at every election since then.

Maroochydore was created in 1992, and has been held by Fiona Simpson, formerly of the Nationals and now of the LNP, since that year.

Nicklin has existed since 1986. The seat was held from 1986 until 1998 by the Nationals, although the seat was briefly lost to the Liberal Party in 1989 until 1990, when a recount found that the Nationals should have won. Independent MP Peter Wellington won Nicklin in 1998, and has held the seat ever since.

Noosa has existed since 1992. The Liberal Party held the seat from 1992 until 2001, when Labor’s Cate Molloy won the seat. She was re-elected in 2004, and in 2006 was defeated by the Liberal candidate. The LNP has held the seat ever since.

  1. I should have posted this a few weeks back but there is an independent running here who has quite a few corflutes about. Also in coolum near the Palmer resort there is a big community push against high rise developments. While a council issue, I imagine people consciously link LNP to developers so it could hurt. It seems ever second home in one section of David Low Way has signage on the issue.

If the independent is linked to this group they may get a decent vote. Mayne an independent vs LNP contest?

As a new seat there is no incumbency factor to prop the vote.

  2. Richard Bruinsma is the Independent candidate. Seems to be campaigning hard. Still think it’ll be a safe LNP seat Post the election. PHON will likely finish fourth behind Labor and preference Richard. As will Labor. So Richard may benefit from preferences, but would need a strong flow to be competitive if he does end up in the top two.

  3. Thanks Qld Observer, Young Nation and PRP… PRP, your views are pretty much what I was thinking (…hoping too). There’s also a Greens candidate and I’ve been told the Greens traditionally will preference an independent before a party. So, I’m confident I’m in the race. Feel free to visit my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/RichardBruinsmaEditor/. Regards, Richard Bruinsma, Independent Candidate for Ninderry.

  4. Likely to go to the Independent I reckon. There is a large part of the electorate that comes from nicklin which is Independent and there is a lot of anger towards the major parties, and given that the Greens, and probably One Nation will preference the Independent, if he gets into the top 2 then he will likely win.

  5. It’s a pity Richard Bruinsma the independent was left out of the stats here because he has a good shot. LNP/NAT representatives have done very little in the area and there is disaffection against the major parties. In many respects it would be very healthy to have n independent in a new seat.

  6. Bill Gissane, former candidate in Maroochydore and Fisher is giving Ninderry a go. Seems like a decent bloke, committed to the Labor cause on the Coast. I am still calling this an LNP v Ind contest.

  7. I looked at Richard Bruinsma Facebook page and there is not a single item of policy on it. You can not get elected by just saying all the rest are unsuitable. Far too much about Richard himself and very little about his beliefs or aspirations. An Instagram feed indicates that flyer has been distributed in North Buderim but this does not appear to be on the Facebook page.
