Geography
Northern parts of the City of Brisbane. Nudgee covers the Brisbane suburbs of Geebung, Boondall, Zillmere, Northgate, Banyo and Nudgee, and parts of Nundah, Wavell Heights and Chermside.

History
The seat of Nudgee has existed since 1960, and has always been held by the Labor Party.

Jack Melloy first won the seat in 1960. He served as deputy leader of the ALP from 1974 to 1976, and retired in 1977.

Melloy was succeeded by Ken Vaughan in 1977. He served as a minister in the Goss Labor government from 1989 to 1992, and retired from Nudgee in 1995.

Neil Roberts won Nudgee in 1995. He was re-elected in 1998, 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2009, and served as a minister in the Labor government from 2009 to 2012.

Neil Roberts retired at the 2012 election. Nudgee was won by LNP candidate Jason Woodforth, beating Labor candidate Leanne Linard with a 17.4% swing.

Assessment
Nudgee was considered a reasonably safe Labor seat prior to the 2012 election. The seat is likely to return to the Labor fold in 2015.

Booth breakdown
Booths in Nudgee have been split into four areas based on key suburbs: Nudgee in the north-east, Nundah in the south-east, Wavell in the south-west and Zillmere in the north-west.

The Liberal National Party topped the primary vote in Nundah, Wavell and Zillmere, and also won two-party-preferred majorities in those three areas. Labor topped the primary vote and won the two-party-preferred vote in Nudgee.

The LNP’s two-party-preferred vote was 51.3% in Zillmere and just over 55% in Nundah and Wavell. Labor’s two-party-preferred vote in Nudgee was 50.8%.

The LNP primary vote ranged from 41% in Nudgee to 46.6% in Wavell. Labor’s primary vote ranged from 35% in Nundah to 42% in Nudgee.

The Electoral Commission does not publish two-party-preferred figures by polling place, so two-party-preferred figures in the following table and map are estimates.

2 COMMENTS

  1. The LNP are gone in this seat – the only LNP held Brisbane seats which will fall earlier than this one is Lytton and Bulimba….possibly Sandgate will be an early declare too.

  2. Once again, have to agree with Rudd for PM – Woodforth is gone. He has had a lot of media attention over the course of his first term as he is an advocate for taking fluoride out of Queensland’s drinking water, which is against LNP policy. This is a rusted on Labor area normally and Wayne Swan wins the booths in this Electorate comfortably. Swan is campaigning alongside Labor’s candidate Leanne Linard, who is another rising star of Queensland Labor, in attempt to boost her local support. One of the first seats to fall.
