NSW by-elections, 2017

There will be three NSW state by-elections on April 8, 2017. There will also be a by-election for Ward 2 of Blacktown City Council.

Gosford

The Gosford by-election was triggered by the resignation of Labor’s Kathy Smith due to ill-health. Smith barely won the seat by 203 votes in 2015, but it is likely that Labor will retain the seat with an increased majority.

Manly

The Manly by-election was triggered by the resignation of former NSW premier Mike Baird in early 2017. On paper the seat is very strong for the Liberal Party but a strong challenge by an independent could see the seat change hands.

North Shore

The North Shore by-election was triggered by the resignation of Jillian Skinner after she was dropped from the ministry in early 2017. On paper the seat is very strong for the Liberal Party but a strong challenge by an independent could see the seat change hands.

Blacktown Ward 2

The Blacktown Ward 2 by-election was triggered by the death of Labor councillor Leo Kelly. Labor held ten out of fifteen seats on the council prior to Kelly’s death, and in the absence of a Liberal candidate they are very likely to retain their seat.
