Thanks for clearifying the Tas green selection process Stewart. I agree with you Ben with regards to Hanna and Georgatos vs McKim too, obviously I was only speaking hypothetically.

Great find Stewart, I'll have to post about that.

My understanding is that the Tasmanian Greens generally do not hold rank-and-file ballots for preselection, although I guess Stewart has found that constitutionally they could decide to do so.

Also, I think there's a big difference between McKim and Georgatos or Hanna. Georgatos was a random lower house candidate in a not-very-winnable seat. Hanna was a blow-in who had never previously won preselection in the party. In contrast, McKim is the leader of the Tasmanian Greens, has been a state MP for eight years, been preselected for Franklin three times and is about to lead the party to what seems like it will be their biggest ever result. I think if he stands he will have no trouble in being preselected.

Good find Stewart. 6 seats, that would be something.

People might also be interested in the following comments from Dr Kevin Bonham on the latest EMRS poll:
http://tasmaniantimes.com/index.php?/weblog/article/demolition-row/
In his discussion he raises the strong likelihood on these numbers of a sixth Tas Greens seat, but obviously things may change in this last week (including the final ALP-Lib outcome). More interesting, Green voters (and voters generally) appear to prefer a Green supported Liberal minority govt over a Labor minority:
http://www.examiner.com.au/news/local/news/politics/voters-no-to-minority-government-survey/1775965.aspx

As to whether a ballot is used, the Tas Greens Constitution says that it is up to the Executive to determine how a position is filled and whether a ballot is required (Section IV, Point 20):

Hamish and Ben, aren't candidates voted on by the rank and file in the Tas Greens? I'm not saying that our Tas Green friends wouldn't select McKim if he was nominated, but Kris Hanna and Gerry Georgatos are prime examples of how a candidate cannot assume pre-selection within the party. This would make Crickey's rumour a little unfounded I would have thought.

Yes, sorry, you're right Ben, I did mean the election after this one. I was getting ahead of myself. I would expect O'Connor to take over as Tassie leader.

If that rumour is true (and it does make sense) then you'd expect McKim to move to the Senate before the 2013 federal and 2014 Tasmanian elections. In which case it looks like Adam Burling (#2 on the Greens Franklin ticket and advisor to Bob Brown) is being lined up to take McKim's seat.

Rumour in Crikey the other day that McKim will take Senator Brown's spot in the next few years (I would assume before the next Federal election, though it didn't specify). McKim is certainly a very intelligent and likeable leader so while it would be a loss to the Tassie Greens (if true of course), it would be good news for the Federal Greens. I wonder who would take over if McKim did retire. Cassy O'Connor? Tim Morris?

Story on the dismissal - http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/03/01/2833319.htm

Hard to see the motivation unless it was genuinely a conservative/environmental hybrid party.
