Petrie – Election 2010

ALP 4.2%

Incumbent MP
Yvette D’Ath, since 2007.

Geography
Northern Brisbane. Petrie covers suburbs on the northern edge of the City of Brisbane, including Bracken Ridge and parts of Aspley. It also includes parts of Moreton Bay Regional Council, including Redcliffe, Scarborough and Deception Bay.

Redistribution
Petrie shifted north in the redistribution. Petrie lost Chermside West and McDowall to Lilley and gained territory on the northern edge of the seat from Longman, including Deception Bay. This increased the ALP margin from 2.05% to 4.2%.

History
Petrie was created as part of the 1949 expansion of Parliament, and has always been a marginal seat, changing sides on many occasions. The seat has been a bellwether seat since 1987.

The seat was first won by Alan Hulme (Liberal) in 1949. Hulme served as a minister in the Menzies government from 1958 until 1961, when he was defeated by Reginald O’Brien (ALP), and Hulme won the seat back off O’Brien in 1963, before resuming a ministerial role.

O’Brien retired in 1972, and the seat was won by Marhsall Cooke. Cooke was not preselected by the Liberals in 1974, and he retired, with John Hodges winning the seat. Hodges held the seat for the Liberals until the 1983 election, when Dean Wells (ALP) won the seat. Hodges won it back off Wells in 1984, and Wells went on to serve as a minister in Labor state government from 1989 until 2004.

Hodges was finally defeated by the ALP’s Gary Johns in 1987. Johns went on to serve as a minister in the last term of the Keating government, losing his seat to Liberal Teresa Gambaro in 1996.

Gambaro held the seat for eleven years before losing to Yvette D’Ath in 2007.

  1. I’d like to congratulate Sally Vincent on her pre-selection for Family First in the seat of Petre.
I wish her all the best as she commences her campaign early.
    So we have:

    Yvette D’Ath ALP
    Dean Teasdale LNP
    Sally Vincent FF

  2. The DLP just pre-selected Laurie Addison for the seat of Petrie
His profile and others should be up this week.
Laurie is a Boilermaker/union members and lives locally in Rothwell.

Ben when I put up the DLP Candidates can I link back to your seat guide ?

    Tony

  3. The link to the LNP candidate returns a 404 Not Found Error.
Isn’t that kind of indicative of the state of affairs in the political wing right now?

I wish there was a decent conservative independant candidate to vote for.

  4. Yeah the LNP have changed their website and got rid of that page that the candidates were originally listed on. They’re now on a different page.

  5. Whilst campaigning with my fellow Democratic Labor Party in Petrie Laurie Addison this morning I spotted a few ALP sign holders spouting Julia Gillard’s Railway for Redcliffemessage. Surely Radcliffe’s railway was built by the Goss Government in 1989. I am sure I remember reading an ALP flyer promising that work would have started on the railway before the next election. But then of course Super Kev came along as Goss’s chief of staff with his unique style of government and sent it to a committee to look at followed by a review followed by another committee followed by consultation with the people of Redcliffe. Plenty of glossy paper but no evidence steel. Why would anyone be gullible enough to believe the ALP (or for that matter the LNP for that matter but I am not old enough to remember their promise’s over this issue.

Who will get the money when Anna Bligh flogs it off to some shonk. Will Gillard use the same business skills she used when building assembly halls to ensure that the Australian Taxpayer is not just giving Anna Bligh a present to make more spending promises in a year’s time.
If they play their cards right they may be able to delay, cancel and then re-promise in 2013.
The DLP welcomes the news that they are building the railway but will welcome more a few workmen starting the task.

The Ted Smout bridge was built as an alternative to the railway. What magnificent “Going Forward” planning the Gillard/ Rudd / Goss/ Bligh governments have shown. “It’s Time” for a major change. Vote DLP

  6. I received a recorded message yesterday from the incumbent member re: the Kippa Ring to Petrie railway, please spend your campaign funds on delivering real policies not veiled promises Ms D’ath.

  7. Where was Peter Jeremijenko the Greens Candidate at the Candidates Forum held at Clontarf Baptist Church on Sunday 15 August? I was told that he failed to turn up because he felt the audience would be hostile. If this is true he was correct the audience was made up of human beings not Koalas. This audience would have been horrified at the Australian Greens supporting candidates such as Lee Rhiannon in NSW who was either thrown out or resigned from Communist Party of Australia over her support for the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Australia cannot afford another Anti human Green Senator in any state.

Petrie certainly cannot afford a Green candidate who will only talk to those who are not hostile.

Laurie Addison DLP candidatre for Petrie managed to make it back from Tarong Power Station to address the forum.

  8. Don’t be too hard on poor Peter. It’s an awfully long drive for him to come out and visit the electorate he seeks to represent.

As for the audience present yesterday, It would be hard to find a more welcoming and inclusive group of people – and given the welcoming and inclusive nature of Petrie residents generally – that’s saying something.

All credit and thanks to Clontarf Baptist Church for putting on such an important and engaging event.

    Liberal Democrats Candidate for Petrie
