What Canada needs is PR. This would end the over representation of the Tories and the Bloc and the under representation of the Other non-microparties. This would cause an expectation of a coalition which would probably usually involve the Liberals who`s usual coalition partners would be the NDP and Greens.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood. I meant "overtake" in individual ridings, to win the seat. Highlighting the issue with FPP. Not overtake in terms of overall seats.

The NDP don't need to overtake the Conservatives. If they can overtake the Liberals, a lot of the arguments the Liberals have over the NDP would dissolve. The NDP now have about half as many seats as the Liberals. I don't think it's unreasonable in the medium term. It has happened in five states.

Of course the Conservatives are rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of the NDP re-aligning themselves strategically to supplant the Liberals.

The NDP are going to take votes off the Liberals in a fair few seats I imagine, but there's not enough of a left vote for the NDP to register significant gains AND overtake the Conservatives. Especially when the Liberals might even lose votes to on their right flank as well.

Ignatieff was probably the wrong choice for leader. He's afflicted by the Liberal (If not Canadian) aversion to coalitions. A Liberal/NDP coalition, even if it did not result in an imminent election, would save the Liberals from getting picked off from both sides by organising which seats each party would target.
