Redcliffe by-election guide posted

Redcliffe1-2PPLNP-turned-independent Queensland MP Scott Driscoll resigned from Parliament earlier this week, facing the threat of expulsion from the Parliament.

His seat of Redcliffe will go to the polls in early 2014 – meaning we now have two expected by-elections due in early 2014 in Brisbane – the state Redcliffe by-election and the federal Griffith by-election, triggered last week by the resignation of Kevin Rudd.

Redcliffe was Labor-held until 2012, when Scott Driscoll won the seat with a 10% margin, following a swing of over 15%.

The seat’s territory proved to be very close at the recent federal election, and the seat could swing either way at a by-election early in the new year.

  1. Redcliffe has been a swinging seat over the years in fact in some respects it has been a bell whether seat following the swings of politics in Queensland.

IT has suffered under a number oif underperforming Major Party candidates but the last one took the cake. It is reasonabkle to think that the residents of Redcliffe will not view LNP favourably. They are now in teh fortunate position of being able to tell NEwman that he is unfit for office whilst not at the same time not having to risk the possibility of another ALP regime.

Lets hope taht minor parties get their act together and put up excellent candidates and this contest can be turned into a fight betweeen Katter, PUP and independents with the LNP jusdged ion the performance of their last candidate and the ALP judged on the performance of the previous member.

IF Yvette Da’ath is endorsed as ALP candidate then may have a chance.

  2. Why should voters judge the labor party on their previous on their previous member, wasn’t that the purpose of them voting for the LNP in 2012?

  3. Observer asks why should voters judge the Labor party on their previous on their previous member. They should do so because they should also judge LNP on their previous choices. Political Parties endorse candidates so that the electorate know that the candidate has been vetted and is up to the standard of the party. The LNP’s standard was Scott Driscoll. The ALP’s standard was Lillian van Litsenburg.

If Redcliffe voters are happy with these standard’s their conscience should allow them to vote for the major parties.

Interestingly Darren Grimwade’s team were out on Morayfield Rd this morning. Are the Libs ready to dump Newman and Newman heading for the polls in the hope of saving the furniture.

The Redcliffe by-election is the opportunity for part of the electorate to tell the electorate what they think of candidates who say one thing before the election and another after the election.

I can think of three crown employees who live in Redcliffe who were told that they had no need to fear for their jobs if Newman was elected who found out within hours of Newman being sworn in that Government Owned Enterprise for whom they worked would be closed. Reg Gulley the LNP MLA who has been looking after Redcliffe’s interests prior to the election promised to repeal the civil unions legislation of the ALP but voted to retain it when faced with a Katter’s Australian Party Bill to repeal the legislation

The yet to be announced ALP and LNP candidates should be judged against the performance of LNP and ALP. This performance is so poor that both candidates should lose their deposits.

  4. But Andrew what was the point of the 2012 vote then? That was the election where people judged the government and the incumbent. At a by-election, voters aren’t going to think about the last labor member because thats what they did in 2012. They will judge the departing MP and the government. The only instance they should judge on the last labor member for Redcliffe if she was running again or if D’Ath runs and in that case they probably could vote based on her performance as a federal MP. But at the 2015 state election, voters in Aspley aren’t going to vote based on the perfromance of both Tanya Davies and Bonny Barry. BTW I would say that Litsenburg was a far better MP then the LNPs Driscoll.
